Lifeline installation: not everything goes when life is at stake

A lifeline is a fall protection system, not a generic solution. Its effectiveness depends entirely on a professional, technically validated and structurally sound installation. In our experience in the field, we have identified frequent errors that can completely nullify the functionality of the system and thus put the worker’s life and the company’s legal liability at risk.

Main errors detected in lifeline installations:

Error 1: Anchoring on uncertified or faulty structures

  • Case study: Installation on a metal trunking without assessing its strength. Result: structural deformation and high risk of collapse.
  • How to prevent: Anchors should only be installed on structures that have been assessed by professionals or structural technicians. Strength must be supported by the manufacturer’s data sheet and structural calculations.

Error 2: Ignoring free fall distance

  • Case study: In a warehouse with low ceilings, a line was installed without correctly calculating the braking distance.

Result: In the event of a fall, the worker would impact the floor.

  • How to prevent: Calculate: worker height, system elongation, fall factor and installation height. The system must avoid any contact with lower surfaces.

Error 3: Use of incompatible or uncertified components.

  • Case study: Use of generic carabiners without certification or strength identification.

Result: risk of disconnection, deformation, breakage and others.

  • How to prevent: Only compatible components certified by the system manufacturer should be used. Each element must comply with standards such as EN 362, ANSI Z359 or similar, with a minimum strength of 22 kN.
